Wildcat Wrestling Update #2

Greetings Westview Wrestling Families –

It was a great tourney at Sumner for our team, they took 2nd place overall!  An excellent start to our season with many wrestlers showing some great growth with off season work! I am very proud of the turnout of families for the long road trip.  Our families, along with all of the JV and Freshman teams, made for a loud and excited crowd!  I know the wrestlers had a great time on the trip.  Rumor has it that Coach Delaney was on the lead horse with a posse of 30 wrestlers riding a carousel on Friday evening.

We also want to recognize a great showing by our Freshman/Novice wrestlers last Wednesday.  We had 15 kids competing, with 6 of them going undefeated in their round robin brackets!  This is a great showing considering many of them have only practiced for two weeks.  Our future is bright with this strong group of young wrestlers!

Volunteers Needed for Rose City Championship Tourney! – Remember, we do not do any other fundraising other than hosting the two tournaments.  Thank you to those that have volunteered already. We do expect all families to get involved in helping at the concessions stand.  Friday December 13th and Saturday December 14th, Westview is hosting the Rose City Championship tournament.  Attached is a list of volunteer signup/needs we have to help with the concession stand.  If you can fill one of the open spots please email me back.  We need three people per session.  Get your family together to take a whole shift and have some fun together.  We always pay attention to covering for each other when your wrestler is competing.  Additionally, I could use some help at Costco on Wednesday evening, I usually end up filling up a couple of flatbeds full of food and could use another person to help push and load.  This would be a great opportunity If you can’t help this weekend and are available Wed. evening.  Let me know if you can help with this.

Wrestling 101 for Parents? – Don’t know the difference between a take down and reversal?  Wondering what a fall is? The difference between a 2pt near fall and a 3 pt near fall?  Are you interested in becoming a more informed fan so you know what the referee is calling? With so many families that are new to wrestling we are wondering how many of you would be interested in session after practice some evening.  Coach Delaney volunteered to be an instructor for the class.    We don’t have any details worked out, but wanted to first see if there is enough interest.  If you are interested in a weekday evening session at approximately 5:30, please respond to me.

Other Volunteer Opportunities – A huge thank you to Dean Durfee for taking on the organization for the end of season awards banquet, he is already putting a plan together!  We will also be needing more volunteers for the concession stand for the NW Duals tournament on December 27 and 28, stay tuned for those details coming out soon.

Competitions this week:  We have a very busy week! Full competition and practice schedule is on our website.

Freshman/Novice Tournament The freshman/novice tournament is at Scappoose High School on Tuesday, 12/10, starting at 4:30 pm.  Wrestlers will stay after school and take the bus to the tourney.  Wrestlers should either bring food/drink for the evening to school with them or their family can bring their wrestler food at the event. These events usually last anywhere from 2-3 hours then will bus back to Westview.

Double Dual Meet Thursday 12/12 at 5:00pm – On Thursday our Varsity wrestlers have a rare opportunity to take part in a double dual meet, that means we compete head to head with two different teams in one night.  We will be competing against two highly regarded California teams, Granite Bay High School and Oakmont High School, that are coming up for the Rose City Tournament this weekend.  The first dual will start at 5:00 pm with the second directly following.  The double dual will take place at Southridge High School.

Rose City Championship Tournament this Friday and Saturday 12/13 & 14 – December 13th and 14th,  at Westview High School.  This tournament is an individual bracketed tournament for each weight class.  With overall team scores kept as well.  This tournament will include JV and Varsity Wrestlers competing this weekend as each school can enter two wrestlers per weight class. Wrestling will start at 2:00 pm on Friday and 9:00 am on Saturday.  The tourney is growing to twenty teams this year with 15 Oregon teams 3 from Washington, 2 from California and 1 from Idaho.  There will be some excellent competition!  More information on the tournament can be found on the Rose City Website Link.

Go Cats!!!!
