Wildcat update #5

Wrestling Families,

Some great accomplishments in 2018 and some good things to look forward to in 2019! Westview Wrestling has a lot to be proud of.

PUSH-UP-THON STEREO – We raised about $2600 and we were able to purchase a complete surround sound and new stereo system with 6 speakers. It is amazing. Big thanks to everyone involved and Travis Blasingame for spearheading this effort. Music not only helps add motivation, it makes the very hard work you kids do more enjoyable.

THIS WEEK
Varsity @ Snohomish Tournament, Snohomish WA (Meet@8:30Fri)
Only entering 14 Varsity wrestlers only for Snohomish
Hotel: Courtyard Marriott in downtown Bellevue
Girls @ Kelso Tournament, Kelso WA

PAC COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS – Westview (11th out of 40 teams)
We had 16 varsity wrestlers compete in the 2-day double-elimination tournament with 40 schools. Half our boys made it to the 2nd day. Those eliminated the 1st day were entered into a 2nd day alternate tournament and had at least 4 matches each – that is a lot of competition mat time which is so critical for development. We grew tremendously in terms of guys learning to find a way to win and gut out some tough ones. We have a lot to be proud of which includes outstanding performance by our two finalists (See results below and at trackwrestling.com )
Joey Coste won 2nd @138 –
Tre Blasingame won 7st place @132

VARSITY 5 COUNTIES TOURNAMENT Jan 11/12 – Some early info for this tournament since it includes out of state traveling. This is a huge and extremely tough individual bracket tournament. Coach Delaney and his staff have specific criteria for which wrestlers will go, he will communicate that directly to the wrestlers. The wrestlers going will be flying down on Thursday, 1/10, staying in a hotel and returning on Sunday, 1/13.
HOTEL: The team will be staying at Springhill Suites by Marriott in Irvine CA.
COST: $400 includes flight, hotel, rental car. Bring money for food, free hotel breakfast
SCHOOL: will miss 2x days of school Thur/Fri – boys arrange makeup

THE ROLE OF PARENTS – The Impact of Trust/Teaching Character thru Sports” – Bruce Brown put on a seminar at Westview few years ago was a very solid message and I wanted to start to share some of the notes from that talk:
What kids want/need from their parents after the game/season:
1. The most consistent answer from players across all ages and sports to the question of, “what was the worst part of your experience in sports?” – The car ride home after the game with their parents. (the critical analysis of the way they play)
2. Kids need time and space after the game to process and decompress. We need to back off. Let them bring it up if they want.
3. What can you say after the game? “I love watching you play!” no judgment in how they played…just that you loved watching!
4. Be a confidence builder not a confidence cutter.
Told a story about a College Division 1 athlete who could have played in any college near home, but the athlete chose to go to the college 1000 miles away to get away from the parents and the “ride home” after the game. Be a great parent –we don’t have to be their coach
